Earthnutz - What sustainability means to us
Share
What does sustainability mean, exactly?
Sustainability is the 'ability' to 'sustain'.
It means that we need to be using the resources available to us responsibly and to stop depleting our natural resources beyond their capability to replenish. And that becomes difficult in this day and age because it’s hard to measure precisely what resources you’re using.
When you plug something in, it’s hard to know where that electricity comes from and what effect the generation of that energy is having on the environment
When you buy something online, it’s hard to know what happened before you clicked ‘buy’ and the impact those processes have had on the planet.
Our aim at Earthnutz is to be transparent about our processes and decision-making so that you’re more informed on what's happening before you press ‘buy’.
One of the biggest things we do in the area of sustainability is zero waste production - designing the production process in such a way that there’s not any waste in the system. That takes into account all of the things we buy in and all of the products that we produce. You can read more info on our zero waste guidelines here.
Another big focus of ours has been the product packaging. We embarked on a really long journey to source fully recyclable packaging that also kept the product fresh and crispy and believe me, that wasn’t easy! Wherever you are in the UK, our cans can be recycled from home and we’re proud to say that they’re made with 80% recycled fibres.
Finally, we run the production unit on a renewable electricity tariff. This helps to neutralize the impact of energy usage in the production of Earthnutz but it also supports the continued investment in the renewable energy sector, which is a nice win-win!
And looking ahead to the future, there’s always improvements to make! We're working towards:
-
A paper lid to make the Peanut Protein Crisp cans entirely plastic free.
-
Developing partnerships with peanut farmers so we can use that knowledge to support farmers who are doing it right.
-
Getting to grips with the calculation of our carbon footprint so that we can become more data-driven and inform future sustainability targets.
